City Guides City Guide: Gruene, Texas One of the most common misconceptions of Dallas is the city fits the stereotypical mold of “Texas” – cowboys, horses, ranches, etc. Though Dallas is a cultural metroplex full of art, fashion, music, and more, it’s not too hard to escape the city and experience more of what Texas has to offer! That being said, today we are featuring one of our favorite Dallas escapes: Gruene, Texas. Stepping into Gruene (pronounced “green”) is like taking a step back in time. This simple yet historic town radiates Texas charm and should definitely be added to your road trip bucket list. My friends and I stopped in this charming town on our way home from a float trip in New Braunfels, and we fell so in love with the town that our quick lunch turned into a 48 hour adventure! One fun fact you may not know is that Gruene Hall is the oldest dance hall in Texas. This legendary dance hall has been a rite of passage for many musicians, such as Willie Nelson, George Strait, Lyle Lovett, and many more! Come on in, grab a beer, take a seat on one of the many picnic tables, and get ready for hours of some of the best Texas country you’ve ever heard! Location: Gruene is located 37 miles northeast of San Antonio and on the border of New Braunfels, Texas. Where to Stay: VIA Gruene Mansion Inn: A charming and historic B&B built in 1872 for Henry D. Gruene, the town’s founder. The Victorian home offers a variety of rooms in the main house, but we rented a two-story Sunday Haus suite (#23) in the back and loved the layout. Though the B&B may not have the luxury of modern hotels, the uniqueness adds to the weekend experience – definitely recommended! What to Do: VIA – Gruene Hall – As mentioned above. this legendary dance hall is a must! – River Floating – Pack a cooler, grab a tube, and spend the afternoon floating the Guadeloupe with friends – The Grapevine – A local hotspot for wine tastings and live music – Gruene General Store – Though a general store usually doesn’t fall on our “what to do” list, this store sells Texas cookbooks, souvenirs, and delicious sweet treats – plus it was built in 1878! VIA Where to Eat: – GriSTmill River Restaurant & Bar – This former Guadeloupe River-powered cotton gin has been turned into the famed restaurant locals and visitors all love! – Mozies – Across the street from Gruene Hall, this is a great spot for lunch and bloody marys! – Inferno’s Pizza – What’s a city guide without a great pizza spot? – River House Tea Room – Stop by this intimate restaurant for brunch on the patio or afternoon tea! – Cantina del Rio – A South Texas ice house offering delicious tex-mex and margs – dining on the deck is recommended! VIA ** For any of you that are avid Bachelor watchers like the three of us, maybe this scene of Kaitlyn Bristowe and Ben H. dancing at Gruene Hall will ring a bell ** VIA Looking for more road trip adventures?
