What To Do In Sorrento, Italy

Known as the gateway to the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento is a picturesque city along the Neapolitan Riviera. What once was considered the Siren City in Greek Mythology for luring sailors onto the rocks with its beautiful song, Sorrento continues to be a hot spot for travelers to this day with its charming appearance and local flair.

Following along my journey through the Mediterranean with Royal Caribbean, Sorrento was the next stop from Positano (click here for our Positano post). Since the cities are only a short drive apart, we took an afternoon drive to Sorrento to explore. From soaking in the sights to indulging in the Italian cuisine, my visit was absolutely heavenly. EXPLORE THE PIAZZA TASSO

Located in the center of Sorrento, this was our first stop in the city. The traditional pastel architecture serves as a beautiful background while you pop in and out of the local shops and restaurants lining the charming streets. You’ll also find lots of horse drawn carriages in the piazza – though those are most popular with tourists, not locals. The Piazza Tasso is the perfect spot to get a quick taste of the city before nestling into a local cafe for a bit of limoncello.

DRINK LIMONCELLO 

Speaking of limoncello, Sorrento is known for their lemons. With lemon trees and orchards surrounding the city, it’s no surprise this citrus fruit heavenly influences the cuisine, as well as local products – bath soaps, anyone? Though you can never go wrong with a bit of sorbet, sipping Limoncello at an outdoor cafe is my favorite way to enjoy a taste of Sorrento. Created by soaking a lemon peel in alcohol, this aperitif is a delicious sweet treat traditionally served after meals.

INDULGE IN LOCAL CUISINE

There’s no denying Italian food is incredible, so get ready to eat A LOT when you visit this city. With fresh produce and authentic cuisine, indulging while in Sorrento is absolutely recommended. From pizzas and pastas to endless gelato, all I can say is YUM.

TAKE WALKS ON THE PIERS

Similar to the umbrella-lined beaches of Positano, Sorrento is easily recognized by its colorful piers jutting out into the water. Since Sorrento is settled on steep cliffs, the piers are the city’s alternative to sandy beaches. Though many of the piers are hotel access only, grabbing lunch or a drink on the pier is a way to gain access to the swimming areas and umbrella chairs.

GET LOST IN THE CITY

Although Piazza Tasso is a central spot in the city with great shops and restaurants, every corner of Sorrento is packed with so much charm. Get lost exploring the back streets of the city and stumble upon quaint cafes and markets, historic churches, boutique hotels, and more. Whether you find a top-rated cafe or a hidden gem, I definitely recommend taking a walk off the beaten path.

ENJOY THE VIEWS

Since Sorrento is located along the Italian coastline, just a quick drive from the Amalfi Coast, the views from the city are absolutely incredible. As the sun begins to set, grab a glass of vino and enjoy the view across the Bay of Naples, overlooking Mount Vesuvius and Capri. The simplicity of the moment combined with the coastal beauty is hard to beat.

So whether you choose to stay in Sorrento or simply take a day trip from Positano or Capri, visiting Sorrento is a must on your next visit to the Amalfi Coast!
